Trump Defends Sessions: ‘The Democrats Are Overplaying Their Hand’

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to issue some scathing assessments of Democrats who’ve taken up a new target, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and to warn the liberal base: You’re not only off-base. You’re “overplaying” your party’s hand.

The tweets come as Sessions announced he would recuse himself from any federal investigation into alleged Russian influence of the November elections.

Sessions said: “I have decided to recuse myself from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns for president of the United States.”

He also said, in an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, that he would submit a “supplement” to the congressional testimony in which he was asked about meetings with the Russian ambassador to the United States. Sessions then said he didn’t meet with the ambassador, in context of answering questions about discussing the presidential campaign and a possible Trump White House.

Democrats have now taken that statement to show Sessions lied, saying he did in fact meet with the Russian ambassador on at least two occasions – once in his Senate office, and once in an impromptu meet at a think tank event in Washington, D.C.

At the same time, the meetings took place when Session was a senator, and a member of the Armed Services Committee, which requires meetings with dignitaries and diplomats and ambassadors from around the world. In fact, Sessions also met with dozens of other ambassadors in his senate office during the same time frame.

The big question focuses on what Sessions discussed with the Russian ambassador. Sessions said the talks were all related to his senate duties; Democrats allege he spoke of campaign issues.

And because Sessions did not mention in his testimony to the Senate that he met with the Russian ambassador at these two specific times, the Democrats said he was obviously trying to hide something – and that something was talk of the president’s campaign.

As yet, no proof exists.

But Sessions, in order to calm the storm, has recused himself from all future investigations of the 2016 election as it relates to possible Russian influence.

And now Trump has come forward to shame the media and left for partisan and senseless attacks, and to commend Sessions for his honesty and integrity.

In a series of tweets, Trump wrote:

“Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not …”

And next: “…intentional. This whole narrative is a way of saving face for Democrats losing an election that everyone thought they were supposed …”

And the next: “…to win. The Democrats are overplaying their hand. They lost the election, and now they have lost their grip on reality. The real story …”

And finally: “…is all of the illegal leaks of classified and other information. It is a total ‘witch hunt!'”
